Adoption and Other Resources for Children in the 19th Century

Class description: Early adoption records in New York State are not sealed and can be accessed if you know which indexes to use in the County Clerk’s office. Records pertaining to the placement of children can also be found in the county’s Board of Supervisors annual reports, and in the records of the county poor farm. Michelle will describe the information that is available in a variety of sources, and where the sources can be accessed.

Instructor biography: Michelle Henry is the Chautauqua County Historian/Records Management Coordinator. Michelle was appointed County Historian in 2000 and has written numerous grant to process and preserve the historical records held in the County Archives.
